Two singles in a double cover?

Options
Hiya,

Just a quick one. My double duvet got ripped and went lumpy in my broken washing machine. I've got two single duvets packed away under the bed.

Do you reckon if I sew them together I could get away with using them as a double if i put them in a double duvet cover?

We tried the continental one single duvet each method a few years ago and it didn't go down very well!
It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

Probably would need some overlap as I'm sure a double is just a phrase rather than a size measurement and 2 singles is wider.
  • A single is 3 feet wide and a standard double is 4' 6" wide. Is probably doable, just might need some careful folding and overlap - but you would end up with a v thick and cosy duvet

I'm pretty sure that dragonette has got the measurements spot on. Overlapping would mean the middle of the new duvet was warmer/thicker than the edges but if you didn't like having separated single duvets then cuddling up in the middle of the bed shouldn't be a problem;).

I'd suggest stitching/pinning them together at the overlap would help otherwise they might separate inside the cover and not lie flat.

A double duvet is 200cm x 200cm. Two singles sewn together will be more like a king size. singles are 140cm x200 cm. They are wider than the bed sizes so are bigger than previously suggested. But a double and a single are the same length.
If you really want to sew to make a new duvet. Could you cut a strip off one duvet and then sew the rough edge to the other duvet, to give a neat edge?

Due to an incontinent cat, I recently had to bin my king size duvet. I bought two single ones (they will fit in the washer if needs be) I used Velcro to join them together. They are just wider than the king size but will squash into the duvet cover. Hope this helps

Alternatively go down to Wilkos - who are selling 13.5 tog basics at £8 (for students). Might have a few left.

We have 2 singles, a fantastic solution, I use a summer weight very thin cotton one for most of the year and hub has a heavier summer one and a winter one as well. I end up with just a duvet cover in the summer. This way we both have our own cover, don't disturb each other and are both our preferred temperature.
