Can a restaurant employer deduct money from waitresses tables sales for tips?

4% seems quite reasonable as someone still needs to administer and account for tips - staff still get 96% of all tips0

It's not 4% of tips....it's 4% of "sales". If a customer orders £100 of meals and drinks the deduction from the employee's pay is £4.4% seems quite reasonable as someone still needs to administer and account for tips - staff still get 96% of all tips
If it's a really busy night and the staff member takes £1,000 of "sales" over 6 hours the deduction would be £40. Minimum wage for 6 hours would be £40.20. If it's so busy the customers may not be happy with the delays and the lack of personal service and leave no tips at all. The employee would then only be paid 20 pence for 6 hours of work.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

It seems not! The deductions are apparently made assuming the waiter gets tips, whether or not they actually do.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

So you could get an employee who not only works for free but also has to PAY to go to work if sales are really high? (if the "4% of sales" figure is more than their wage)0 -
Regardless they will still get paid their wage.theoretica wrote: »It seems not! The deductions are apparently made assuming the waiter gets tips, whether or not they actually do.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -

It is not always wise to name and shame companies.
OP I have read this and I believe the supposed chains were looking into this after complaints. Hope it'd be solved soon as it is really cheeky.ally.0 -

I believe from seeing this in the press it is ether Turtle Bay or Pizza Express. My money is on the former. Disgusting way of doing business and I have refused to go to either because of this. Vote with your feet.0 -
I know some local eat in places won't let you add tips to card payments wonder if that is for tax purposes though.0
