Unemployment & Tax Refund

Hi

I was unemployed for a while, but have now secured temporary work.

I realised that during my unemployed period that I was probably due quite a significant tax refund (due to overpaying in my earlier employment.)

I phoned HMRC and asked them how could I get this tax refund paid to me, and they said that I would have to complete an 'online self assessment' as I am also registered as self employed (made no profit.)

Do I still have to complete a 'self assessment' to get the refund, or can I get the refund through PAYE now that I am back in employment?

Thanks

Self employment is the reason they want a tax return regardless of your PAYE position. If you weren't self employed, they could process the refund without a tax return.

some idea of the dates of employment and unemployment would help

    were you claiming JSA?

however, if your new employers are given a correct up to date P45 then you will get the tax refunded (if application) in you pay.
  • Hi Clapton

I've not been working for an employer between Oct 2014 and Oct 2015. Claimed JSA for about 8 weeks since the beginning of August.

My new employer (an employment agency) has not even asked for my P45.
Also for the above time periods I've been registered as self employed, though made no profit.

    Thanks

you should receive a P45 from the job centre people and give the relevant section to your new employer
