Buying my fathers council house

My father lives in council rented accommodation, and has done for many years. He would like to be a home owner but he is also a pensioner. Would he be allowed to buy the house and me and him pay the deposit and mortgage?

Thanks

Symon

I take it you don't live in the property too.

Your father can exercise his right to buy but his age could be a stumbling block in him obtaining a mortgage. You cannot apply for a mortgage because you don't have the right to buy it.

Unfortunately, after years, possibly decades of renting your father might have left it a bit late in the day to become a home owner.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I think you need to explore this more as it probably doesn't make financial sense for him - why would he want to be a home owner at this time of life ? At the moment he has a secure tenancy for life, the council will maintain his house and if he is struggling to pay the rent he can claim housing benefit.

If he buys, then he takes on all the worry about organising and paying for home maintenance, and if he can't afford the mortgage he could end up homeless ....

What will mortgage payments be like compared to his rent ?

I'm not an expert, but I don't think there will be any problem with you giving him the deposit. But if you want to take advantage of his right to buy discount, then it has to be him buying it and the property staying in his name for so many years, so you may not get your money back...

I've just altered your post to make it more realistic.

My father lives in council rented accommodation, and has done for many years. I would like to profit from his tenancy but he is also a pensioner. Would I be allowed to profit from his tenancy and get a cheap house before he dies and me and him pay the deposit and mortgage?
