Swapping Jobs

On Monday I start my new job, how long do I need to be there to get a mortgage?

  • Hi, I've just seen your previous post to this one. I'm not a broker so I don't know if what I'm saying is correct, but I always thought a minimum of 3 months, but that could well be wrong. Also whether its in the same line of work as your previous job or not. Also, you might be in probation at your new job, so its another risk for the lender. With regards to your debt in your other post, I personally would pay the 2k debt and have a 68k deposit as its one less outgoing. I may be wrong, but thats my stance on it.

Depending on the full circumstances you could start the application up to 3 months AHEAD of starting the job

When I was buying my first place; I had only been at my new job for maybe 1.5 months.

I knew this would be a bit of an 'issue' so I got a letter from my employer confirming that I wasn't in a probation period and that I was confirmed as full time employed already.. Seemed to help as I got the mortgage approved.

Depends on your circumstnces but worth a thought
  • I applied for my mortgage 2 days after starting my new job. The bank requested 1st pay slip, proof the wages had gone into my account, and written confirmation from my employer that i worked there. I was offered the mortgage 1 month after application (partly because of having to wait for the first payslip, but mostly because the HR in my company are useless and submitted a job reference instead of mortgage reference!) You would need a broker to find a mortgage provider that doesnt mind about length of service or probation period. Not sure if it was because of this or because we were applying for a 95% mortgage but the interest rate we got wasnt brilliant
