    I don't want a scapegoat - I'm asking what possible outcomes are likely to exist for a failing project when the project manager leaves and isn't going to be replaced. I wanted to hear from people who have experienced this before, because it could be that things went unexpectedly well or that things went very badly. I'd like to hear more about this.
    The outcome will depend on many things, including but not limited to::
    • The stage the project is at now;
    • The quality of the work done thus far;
    • The availability of information on what has been done thus far, how it has been done, what is expected to be done from now on and the success criteria;
    • What the project is;
    • The roles, responsibilities and competencies of the people left working on the project;
    • Whether others still working on the project are willing to make up for the loss of the (ineffective) manager;
    • The expectations of higher management;
    • The expectations of other stakeholders;
    • The resources required to complete the project;
    • The resources available to complete the project.
    Way too complex a situation to give meaningful advice on the information available.
    loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

    I am a 'researcher and evaluator' for a social care project designed to lead to better outcomes for families.

    What is your contribution to this project?
    What do you do all day?

    As I said on the original thread someone needs to engage the stakeholders(those paying) and get the project under control with writen documents that both sides are working too.

    If there is a project owner/leader/champion - anyone with the political & financial will & clout to keep this running, then you can hope for a new project manager, ruthless clarity on timescales & ultimately delivery.

    If there is anything less than a strong clear lead forwards, then different parts will start to head off at tangents, and eventually the whole project will collapse in an expensive mess. It *may* still be hauled back on track right up until all the money is gone, but every passing week makes it harder.

    I'd draft your current evaluation with the clear observation that this project leadership has been weak. (Name names. Have the different deadlines for different sections documented in copy section documents so it can quickly be seen who has been told what, when.)

    Run an eye over your c.v. as being associated with a failing project can 'stick'. All being well, you can alert the higher authorities that they need to get a new manager in stat, but have an exit strategy in case?
