I find that dry air makes sore throats worse and high humidity slightly better. And our homes do tend to be dryer when the heating is on. Inhaling steam, a warm steamy bathroom, or even a boiling pan in the kitchen (but don't boil it dry!) and wet towels on the radiator might help very slightly. If you can breathe through your nose and keep your mouth shut most of the time that will keep it from drying out as much too.

Another vote for soluable aspirin. Also honey is very soothing and has great healing properties.

Hope you get a bit of relief soon.
  • I suffer from really bad throats and find the only thing that works for me is dequadin lozenges - might be worth a try. Do hope you're feeling better soon.
  • OP,
Try Ultra Chloraseptic Anaesthetic Throat Spray, I find this to be the only medication which significantly reduces the pain when i have a severe sore throat.

Thanks again everyone for all your suggestions.I have had the headache from hell all day today. This is how it all started, and I thought the antibiotics had sorted out my sinuses. So now I have something else to make me feel crap. Will give aspirin a try, actually finding my mouthwash, though it stings of course, does seem to ease it.Haven't any honey, find it a bit sweet but will send hubby for some tomorrow.

Thanks too for your kind wishes.

a spoon of honey in a cup of warm to hot squash can be soothing and easier to pallet if you dont like the flavour of honey.
  • Sorry to hear you're still suffering so badly . I resort to baby food when my tonsils are at their worst, small jars, no effort and not that expensive.

Give the neti pot a thought, sounds revolting but is amazing for sinus and allergic rhinitis problems - honest .

Lack of dignity and hysterical laughter from family totally worth being able to breathe through both nostrils at the same time !

I got a little relief from Airwaves chewing gum, bnreath in deep and it cools the backof your throat, but I do sympathise.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I also swear by Dequadin lozenges. They numb the throat so take one then drnk when they have taken effect.

The last time I had a sore throat and earache my doc gave me one these throat sprays. That was fantastic. Eased the pain immediately, again making eating and drnking painless.

I've found that whenever I have anything affecting my upper respiratory tract it proves much easier to sleep in an armchair.
