Paid in error by old employer

Ok, so my wife left her last job in August and started a new one at the beginning of September. We noticed that she was paid for her old job in September when she should not have been. We informed them of the mistake the next day and they said they would write to us explaining how to proceed in sending the money back. However we have still not heard anything, which got us to wondering, is there a time period within which they have to reclaim it before it's too late?

Any help on this would be great. Obviously we want to give it back, but thought I'd ask the question. Thanks guys and gals. :D

6 years I believe they can take action to recover the money.

Why don't you just send them a cheque?

Was she paid in full, and did she have any leave she hadn't taken owed to her?

Did the figures on her P45 agree with what she was actually paid, or what she should have been paid?

I always try to be clear about exactly what is owed to me in my final pay cheque. If you are, I'd write one more letter inviting them to write as they promised.

Meanwhile I'd have the money in the best interest paying account I could find ...
