Endowment - Cash in or Sell?

Please can anyone help? My 'cash strapped' boyfriend has an endowment which he can redeem, but we've heard that some companies will buy them and that you can get a better deal from selling them. Please does anyone know whether this is true? Also, where would we find and how would we recognise a reputable company?
