Tax return

Hi, I'm new to the forum and looking for some help.
First of all sorry if this is in the wrong section.
I am self employed working with my mate who sub contracts to the council as a window fitter. When we hand in our invoices 20% tax is automatically deducted out of our pay before it goes in to his bank account. The problem is my tax also gets taken out of it but they only have his utr for the tax if that makes any sense. Any how how do I go about claiming back my tax return? I only earned around £4000 last tax year as I didn't start until November and will earn around £18000 this tax year. I only earn around £350 a week so to be paying between £60 - £100 a wee depending on how much work I do is quite a lot compared to being on minimum wage and paying less that half that. I dont get any pay slips off him he just transfers it into my bank account. I want to try get it sorted asap as not to keep HMRC waiting or them sending me bills for tax that I have already paid. Thanks in advance.

So your mate is employed? But you're working for him self employed. Why does the company not pay you as a contractor and him as an employee separately? Is he allowed to hire people to help him? If he is allowed then he should be able to set you up as a supplier. Or maybe he can even charge you as an expense to the company and then pay you in full without tax from his own account, which he then just receives back in his pay, like a general expense. Seems strange situation I've hired friends to work for an old company where I was employed and the company paid their invoices, I didn't go near their money.0

Yes it is under cis, we're both self employed and sub contract to the them. But they only pay it through one utr. They do the same for all the gangs they got working for them. Would it be easier to just get all the statements they send and take them to an accountant?0
