Hi all,
A bit of a food question please.
I cooked some apples in my aga last night. I forgot about them and they had been in the simmering oven for about 5 hours.
When I took them out they were brownish but looked ok, just very stewed. So I put them on the side to cool over night and planned to make a crumble today with them.
I have just spooned them into the pie dish and they have a pinkish tinge to them.
Do you think they will be ok to eat?
Thanks all

This sometimes happens when I make apple crumble...They go in green and come out pink. Not sure what causes it but would be interested to know.0

Gooseberries go in the pan green and come out pink when they are cooked.:hello:  please play nicely children !0

I think it depends on the variety of apple and how it reacts when the inner flesh is exposed to the air. The only time you need worry is if your apples are wearing a fur coat! One life - your life - live it!0

I have just peeled a big bag of faller's that I was given and they too react to the air like this sometimes.Usually when I am waiting for them to cool down so I can pack them into boxes for freezing.More so with eating apples I have found than Bramleys although they too can turn slightly pink0

Yes, this is a natural colouring for cooked apples - as others have said, it varies with variety.
If you make apple jelly you often get a lovely pink colour.
Now you can stop worrying and find it cheering!0 -
:T I'm inspired to pick some of our Bramleys for a crumble. Ooh, just remembered, still got some rhubarb in the freezer, I'll stick that in too......yum !!!:Tkeep smiling,
