There are some customer service people who work very hard to provide just that, customer service, just like there are in all industries. To be dismissive of almost all of them is I think a bit insulting. (And likewise raising almost front-line staff up to be paragons of virtue is also a bit blinkered.)
Of course there are! But if you are disagreeing with me that the attitude encountered is endemic in the rail industry, then we will have to agree to disagree that it is I who is "blinkered"!

I will also add that not only is the attitude endemic, denial that there is even a problem is also rife.

Perhaps people like a season ticket to avoid the need to constantly spend time having to buy tickets individually each day (ie "time is money") and don't mind if it costs slightly more for the convenience?

You can buy them in advance.. "Day returns for these days: blah blah blah". Then when the guard or inspector comes round just give them the wodge of tickets and say "It's one of these".

"But sir/madam..." . The rest of the story you know, and they may eventually get the message..

It's one of those routes with an anomaly or 2 (or 3 or 4), the day return to Godalming is £6 but to Guildford which is two stops less is £7.50

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I have submitted a complaint to Transport Focus, and will write to the managing director. I am also seriously considering trying to cycle the route.

Knowing the train companies they will probably just put up the price of the day ticket so that the season ticket is then cheaper than it.
