Hmrc sa?

Hi,

We have had a payment this morning as i have googled it, it comes up as tax refund for self assessment, but some people seem to think it is wrong, and we will have to pay it back.
Before I attempt the torturous ringing of hmrc, can anyone confirm please?

Are you expecting a refund? Have you submitted SA? What did the calculation say?

What sort of a payment, do you mean directly into your bank account rather than a cheque (the latter would be clearly marked as coming from HMRC)? You would only get that if you have requested a refund in some way and advised HMRC that you want it paid that way and given them your account details. If you've done all that then the payment shouldn't be a surprise, as it appears to be unexpected then it probably is an error that you will have to repay.

My husband does submit self assessments. He did point out this morning that we paid tax on a ppi refund from a few years ago, in a year that he did not lay tax, and the amount is the same, so we are wondering if it that?

Ps it was direct into account and showed up as hmrc sa.

Well then, there's your answer, it's Self Assessment. If you log on to your account you should find the detail behind the payment - you should get a statement in the post but I have known the payment to turn up first.
