Halifax mortgage employer reference

Hi

Myself and my partner are due to complete in 2.5 weeks. I was wondering when is the latest that Halifax would ask for an employer reference? Work haven't informed me that they've been asked for one yet so I was curious as to whether Halifax ever ask at the very last minute or whether they are finally content and just sit back and wait as we have signed the deed.

Any info on when Halifax asked for your employer references (if at all) would be lovely for my peace of mind.

Thanks

  • For me, they asked as soon as the application was submitted. I was advised by my broker the valuation would not happen until my agency replied to the Halifax.

Ordinarily, Employers references are things of the past.

Lenders may ask for them where:

You are new to the job
There is an element of bonus
    You are on maternity leave

    etc
    I am a Mortgage Broker

Our broker said that Halifax wouldn't need one but because of the complex way that my husband is paid, they asked for a letter outlining his basic salary and bonus options. They did this a day after the application was submitted so I'd say you'd have heard by now possibly.

If they wanted an employer's reference, they'd ask for one during the underwriting process, that is before the mortgage offer.

They'd do this to confirm you earn what you say you earn, and therefore confirm that you can afford to pay the mortgage back.

There wouldn't be much point in issuing the mortgage offer, and then wondering about affordability!

So, no, they won't randomly write to your employer two weeks before completion.

In any case, a lender asking for an employer's reference is nothing to worry about..... As long as you've been truthful about what you earn!
