Returning an item without a receipt

Options
Hi :)

I appreciate this is probably an oft-asked question but I have been googling and can't find a definitive answer.

I purchased an item on 29th September which on Friday (less than 2 weeks later), I realised was faulty.

Due to a manic weekend, I only got round to looking for the receipt today (so still under 2 weeks from purchase) and typically, can't find it.

Hubby rang the shop and they said that if I took it back they would have a look and assuming there "were no signs of abuse", they would exchange the item for me.

When I went in, the shop assistant that hubby had spoken to on the phone was lovely, offered to help me find the item to exchange it etc. Typically, they didn't have it so he helped me find an alternative.

At the till, I was passed on to the supervisor who was far less civil. The replacement item was £1 less than the item I was returning so she said "oh, you'll have to spend another £1 or have a credit note". (I was actually happy to exchange like for like, but hey ho). I picked something else to go with it.

When it came to ending the transaction, I was told "you didn't give me a receipt so I can't give you a receipt".

Having worked in retail most of my adult life, although admittedly not for the last 3 years, this didn't ring true but I just wanted to get out so I left it at that. However, a bit of research on the internet looks to show that I was entitled to a refund as the item was faulty and while I didn't have the receipt I could prove purchase (bank statement).

I'm not going to kick up a massive fuss about it, but would like it clear in my mind that as I was returning a faulty item within a short period of time and had proof of purchase, I was entitled to a refund had I wanted it; and also that I should have received a receipt for the replacement item? (Particularly as I bought items over and above the exchange which I now don't have a receipt for).

TIA!
