Using up carraway seeds?

Options
I've been doing a cupboard clearout and it was the turn of the herbs & spices shelf last night.

As well as 3 jars of ground cumin (1 for me, 1 to the neighbours on each side!), I found a jar of carraway seeds that I must have bought for a fancy recipe at some point in the past.

There must only be a couple of tsps at most gone from it.

Any suggestions on how to use up the rest?
What does carraway go well with?
I know you won't let me down

Caraway seeds are great in soup - they really 'lift' it; I often include them in veg soups. In Roman times, caraway went with chicken.

Caraway seed cake, I love it. There are a lot of recipes, I always use the Bero Madeira cake but this is as good as.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/madeiracake_73878.shtml

Add 2 tablespoos of seeds and stir in just before putting it in the oven. Forget the peel for the top.
  • Caraway Seed Cake

    165 g (6 oz) margarine
    165 g (6 oz) caster sugar
    3 large eggs
    225 g (7.5 - 8 oz) self-raising flour
    38 g (2 oz) ground almonds
    1 - 2 tbs milk
    3 tsp (rounded) caraway seeds

    Pre-heat the oven to 180°C.
Grease a 2-lb loaf tin and line the bottom with greaseproof/baking paper.
Beat the eggs. Cream the margarine & sugar together until pale and fluffy then beat in the eggs. With a metal spoon fold in the flour, ground almonds and caraway seeds. Add enough milk (1 -2 tbs) to give a good dropping consistency. Spoon into the baking tin and level.

Bake in the centre of the oven for about 1 hour, or until the cake shows signs of shrinking away from the sides of tin and the top is firm to touch. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn on to a wire rack to cool. Left a bit longer in foil, (when fully cooled), the seeds infuse and make it even tastier.
  • Oops, we must have posted cake at the same time...

I have a vague recollection that alot of Hungarian recipes use caraway, especially in with cauliflower...

beware of sudden overuse....wind....they can be pretty strong on the digestive system....

I use caraway seeds when cooking cabbage. Slice a white cabbage and cook in boiling salted water with one or two tsps carraway seeds. Gives a lovely flavour!

    Roast potatoes

Small potatoes, halved, rubbed in oil, salt, black pepper and seeds and roasted in the oven.

Served with gammon baked in cider

    Yum!
