What makes my carpet smell fresh?

Options
I usually use Shake n Vac. Having just bought a Bissell Lift off I used it and a fine white powder came through the back filter. After phoning CS they told me that I shouldn't use Shak n Vac as it can cause problems with the filters and damage them.

So... What can I use on my carpets before vacuuming, that will make them smell fresh?

I never understood the concept of shake n vac. Put a nice smelling powder on your carpet then hoover it back up again! Surely the better your hoover (ie the more it sucks up) then the less of the powder is going to remain in/on your carpet.

Anthea's tip (which really works) is to put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton wool ball, and pop this into your hoover bag or dust reservoir if you are bagless. As you hoover, the cotton wool ball heats up a little from the heat of the motor and it leaves a gentle, subtle fragrance on the carpet which last for 2-3 days. You can also get commercial sachets to put in the bag which do the same job, but the cotton wool balls are cheaper and you can choose your own fragrance
