Additional Job - Tax claim?

Hello!

This is my first post so I hope I do not break any rules/forum etiquette ! Please let me if I do!

I am currently employed part time and have been starting to build up my own photography company as an additional job (which I would like to eventually do full time). So far I haven't actually earned anything from it as I have mainly been doing free photo shoots for friends to gain experience. I have however invested money into my camera equipment and have been improving it to professional standard over the years which has been quite costly.

I am hoping to get advice on my next step:
What do I register myself as with HMRC? - Do I become self-employed although I will still have my main job during the week for the next few years?
Can I claim my camera equipment as expenses through a tax claim?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!
