    It all sounds horribly American to me. Your friend should probably call herself something along the lines of Billie-Mae and start looking for another job immediately. I doubt that a company that doesn't respect her identity will give her much respect in any other way either.

    Interestingly (if you have a look at my reaction in post 22 or 23), I am an American (or more accurately a citizen of the US) and was never asked to change my name there!

    I have been in a friendship group of 4, 2 of us with the same name, school class of 21 three with same name and 2 with r surname and one with w so they sounded similar. Work in an office of 9 there were 3 of us with the same name. I have worked in a call centre with several people we had more than one Rob Andy etc and all my brothers in law and one of my brothers have the same name. I think it's strange to change your name for work like when you get "James" from Bangalore telling you the weather is bad in Birmingham and you live 200 miles away..strange..
