Plastic container smells of onion

Hi

I stored some chopped up raw onion in a plastic container and now the container and lid stink of onion no matter how many times I wash them up.

Any advice how to make them loose the smell?

Thanks :D

  • Try bicarb mixed into a paste and smeared all over, left overnight. Or vinegar?? And use a plastic bag for onion.

I tried freezing onion by placing the raw chopped onion into a plastic freezer bag, then into another freezer bag and then into a plastic container (too much plastic I know :o) but when I got it out to use the container stank of onions and so did the whole freezer.
So I would love to know the answer to this too please.

I have heard several ways to get rid of smells like this but never tried them myself...

    1. Bicarb/baking soda
    2. A raw potato?
    3. Charcoal
    4. Salt rubbed in

I suppose you could seal the tub with any of these in and see if it goes.

If they don't work, perhaps lemon juice or vinegar?

(An odd one... water and stainless steel work for your hands - not sure if it would work for a container, but worth a go. It's the theory that Zylo smell killers work on).

Of course there is another simpler option... make that container your 'onion'
    saver!

Let us know how you get on

I put a chopped onion in a bag in the fridge the other day and needless to say it absolutely stank! But to get rid of the smell I put some coffee in a tub and that seemed to get rid of it so maybe try it with sealing the container?

There are 2 methods that I have used in the past.

1 Soak overnight in cold water with a couple of 'Steradent' tablets.
2 Soak overnight in cold water mixed with 'Milton' bottle steralising fluid.

Both methods have worked for a whole host of different problem kitchen smells.
  • I found lemon juice works well here - also for stained saucepans. Or in them a bit of washing powder in warm water left over night.
