Covering maternity leave

I work in a team of 3.
My manager, myself, and my colleague on the same level.
My colleague has fallen pregnant, and will be leaving on maternity leave.
I believe with a bit more hard work and more efficient proceses, I would be able to do the job of myself and my colleague while she's on maternity leave.
I could really do with increased income.
Is this a wise move? Or would my employer just see it as me having spare capacity at work?
Any advice would be welcome.

Are you both part time?
What makes you think there would be more money?0 -
If you did that there could be a danger that snr mgt see that your team is overstaffed and make the maternity lass redundant.0

Aren't people on maternity leave protected from redundancy? If so, it might be the OP looking for work at the end of the maternity leave!
Absorbing the whole of another person's job would be a huge task, assuming both people worked the same hours. It would certainly raise flags to management that 2 people weren't required for the job.0 -
We are both full time.
Thanks for the comments above, I'll take the comments on board, and allow a temporary worker to be found to cover maternity.
Thanks.0 -
You still have the risk the temp worker highlights how you pair have been slackers.0

Depends how long your colleague is off on maternity for. Some jobs may require intensive training which may take a few months so if maternity is to end after 6/7 months it may not be worth it.
But I do agree that in any normal case, take the help on offer.0 -

Do you have a choice?
Agree with others, though, even if some have been a bit harsh in the way they have expressed themselves.
Do you believe there really isn't enough to occupy two full timers?0
