Where to work in the uk?

A friend of mine, a UK national, is returning to the UK to look for work for three months from January 201six. I cannot offer her accommodation as I live in a bedsit and whilst there is work in Brighton, where I live, the rent is very high. She has asked me (since she doesn't have internet where she is now) to find out an area in Midlands/South East/East england where there are jobs in admin, supermarkets or other work that doesn't need qualifications and where rent is cheap.
It is likely she will be on minimum wage, so she does not want to spend £20 a night on accommodation. Does any area rent for £70 a week or less, but still have work that she has a reasonable chance of getting?
I haven't a clue where to start... can anyone help out with suggestions as to where to start looking?
Many thanks

Problems you will face are as follows.
1: Looking at vacancies in an area now will not mean they will have plenty in January when there is normally a downturn in trade.
2: Renting a place again there could be rooms to rent at the costs required but that is not to say it will be the same in January.
3: Looking for both a job and a place for rent for yourself is hard enough so to do this for someone else will prove very difficult indeed.
Your friend really needs to look at family here in order to assist with a place to crash where they maybe would not charge her and then from this she can look at finding a place for rent after she has sorted employment out.0 -
Far from ideal but Shirebrook in North Nottinghamshire - Sports Direct are always recruiting.0

It is a bit of an impossible task i agree! She hasn't got family in the uk and whist she could couchsurf with friends, she would like a base of her own, probably in a shared house/hostel.
Clearly she will be looking for a place and job when she arrives, she just wants a bit of fore knowledge as to where to travel to first, which has some chance of work and not a place that offers none (which I know is impossible to predict for the future, but working on current trends the chance of her finding work in Brighton is high, but so is the rent.
It's a pity she can't arrive now as the holiday recruitment season starts, but she can't!
Thanks for the suggestions to date. Keep them coming!0 -
3 month only?
What happens then.
I would say start with finding a place to stay free then look for work.
If it somewhere else and pays enough to afford rent move.
This is where establishing a GOOD work history with an employer that caters to the transient and tends to have vacancies so you can come back and get a job relatively quickly
Eg: JDwetherspoons, employs loads of students that come and go to their home town, often has vacancies at loads of pubs especially the busy ones. Not everyone can cope with the shift weekends long term so a steady trurnover, happy to take back people that have left if they were good.0 -

This is a good question. Is she returning for some other reason and wants to work just to earn some money while she's back? January - March is hardly the ideal time to be in the UK unless she has been in a tropical paradise and is desperate for a spell of grim weather.
She'll also face problems trying to rent somewhere for 3 months, as LLs will almost invariably be looking for someone who wants to rent for at least 6 months. Her best bet may be to lodge with a property owner who has a room to rent - many of these will not be advertised until shortly before they are due to be available.0 -
she works overseas and is back in the uk to earn money. the weather is no problem. average wage where she is for the rest of the year is less than 200 gbp per month so minimum wage in the uk is good for her IF she can save some of it to take home.
i can't see how she can get free accommodation when she will be out working, but thanks for the info re: landlords wanting a six month stay unless it is in a private house airbnb type of thing. I have passed this on.
thanks for info with regards to pubs.
Thank you10 -
I'd be amazed if anyone can save very much in 3 months on minimum wage without free accommodation, especially when fares for travel back to the UK then back to wherever she lives now are factored in. I think it'll be a wasted trip in that respect.0

I wouldn't look at anywhere in the South East near the M25 the rent is obscene. I can get 1300 a month for renting out my 2 double beds and a box room not including bills where council tax is about 135 a month a modest 1 bed flat will still be about £750First Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0

Thanks for that... south east has cancelled itself on cost alone. now looking at east anglia as an option. She knows she will probably only get minimum wage so trying to keep accommodation costs down. she really only needs a bed to sleep as she wants to work long hours!0
