in Cutting tax
Someone stops working mid-way during the tax year (for example, in order to travel around the world for an undetermined amount of time), but remains UK resident for the current tax year. Their total income in the current tax year is only from salary and bank interest (for which they would have filed R85), and comes to less than the personal allowance. They do not receive any benefits.
- are they required to inform HMRC of anything?
- will the overpaid tax on the personal allowance be refunded without needing to contact HMRC?

They are not required to inform HMRC of anything. The tax refund will be calculated at the end of the tax year and sent as a cheque, with I think a 3month or 6 month expiry date. This could be a problem if the person is traveling around the world.
Suggest that they talk to HMRC now and they may be able to get a refund before they depart.0
