Bike Cycling help

Options
Hi All

I am looking at the idea of getting another Bike for commuting to work about 2 miles each way and riding to the gym 3 miles aswell as just riding for lesuire.

The reason I said again is because Last year I bought a bike from Halford it was apollo one and cost £170 and it got buckled wheels broke breaks within 2 months.

I am not sure if my weight cause it but I am 100kg 15.7kg and 6ft tall So I was wondering if anyone could recommed me a some good bike brands and what size frame and tyres I should get. And which type do you think suits my needs the most i.e hybird, mountain, road bike
May even look for a well care for second hand bike for £200-£300 as I havent got £500-£1000 to spend on a bike

Thanks in advance

You may get more of a response if you ask a mod to move this to the 'Public Transport & Cycling' forum.

First off, the Apollo really is junk and unfortunately if you want a new bike you'll get exactly what you pay for.

Like you i'm a larger cyclist at 16st 2lbs and I have a Halfords Carrera Subway which I had a similar problem with the spokes on the rear wheels all giving out within 6 months. That said, I also have a road bike which I have had for 4 years and done several thousand miles on without a single bend in the wheels or spokes so there are bikes out there that will take the weight and http://39stonecyclist.com/am-i-too-heavy-for-a-bike/ shows a guy riding several bikes at well over that weight!

Under £300 you are really going to get a bike where they've cut every corner possible to keep the price down and wheels are one of those areas that will suffer.

There are hundreds of people out there who buy an expensive new bike then end up selling it a year later after it's just sat in the shed so you may well find you get a much higher spec of bike by going second hand.

Also, for what you need it for avoid suspension. You only need that if you are doing real off road riding down lots of drops and jumps. Unless you're doing that all you are achieving by adding suspension is adding weight and something else that cuts into the budget and can go wrong.

What sort of budget are you looking at? The Specialized Crosstrail 2015 is a cracking bike under £400 and other suggestions are the Giant Escape, Trek FX and Pinnacle Lithium that are a little cheaper.

The instruction book for a bike should specify the maximum rider weight. I have a Whyte and its max is 19 stone (120kg). In the shop, ask to see the book if you don't want to ask about weight.

Simple, don't go to Halfords. Go to your local Bike shop instead where you'll get real advice from people who know their bikes.

  • I am about your weight and bought a second hand apollo. Only issue is I can't keep the seat up! It slides down the pole , but haven't noticed any other issues
