I am looking to apply for a job and need to provide 2 references. I can put the employer I am with down but am told by others at work that they don't provide references (its the MOD). My boss said I could use my appraisals to shown an employer. I probably wont get a reference from the company I worked for the current one as I had a live warning on my file - I left 2 months before it expired but I had no choice as my new job intake date could not be moved.

I am going to try to get the application done today as its due tomorrow. I know I should have done it much sooner but I have just been worrying about who I can put down as references as I don't know many people - we have moved to a new area. There used to be a family friend who would help on my dad's side but they have moved away.

I appreciate this is all a bit too late now but I suppose its better to get on and submit the application rather than just admit defeat and regret it forever. If accepted they have staggered start dates so it would fit with my current job's 3 month notice period. I could maybe put down a woman who supervised some voluntary work I did last summer? Maybe if I put down work and her I could change them if I get past the assessment centre, say one of them is going to be away maybe.

whoever you put down, make sure that you ask them first if they are happy to be named.

You could check with your previous boss - even if you had a live warnign on your file, if there had been no other issues and you were simply working out the time, they may be able to provide a reference, or may be able to provide a minimla refernce (i,.e that you worked for them in [role] from [date] to [date])
