Help - Old "Debt"

Hi. I received a letter at the weekend advising I owed Halifax £1400 and needed to contact Link Financial to discuss repayment.
My concern is that I haven't held an account with Halifax for about 15 years. I wrote back to them asking for proof of when this relates to, where the account was opened and a copy of the signed application showing my signature before anything further is discussed.
I'm worried it could be identity theft. But if it does transpire to be my debt (although I doubt it), can I refuse payment under the "statute barred" rule?
I've only just got myself out of a horrible debt situation and don't want to take a step backwards now I'm clear!

You've done the only recommended thing at this stage by writing a prove it letter. You now just need to wait for a response.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Hi,
Any period of six years with no payment or written acknowledgement would mean the debt will be statute barred, and you would not have to pay it.
As said above, you have done the right thing, now it's a waiting game.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Thank you both. Will see what they come back with but the 6 year time rule helps!0
