Suspicious letter from Barclays

I received a letter yesterday from Barclays that I was expecting re my full and final settlement.
I also received another letter pertaining to be from Barclays with all the correct details requesting I settle using a different sort code and account number - the letter was littered with spelling and grammar errors and was not signed. I knew straight away it was a fake.
What concerns me is how the fakers got my details and when I phoned Barclays fraud dept they wasn't interested at all.
Does anyone have any advice? I am concerned about phoning Barclays and paying this debt using debit card in case someone listening in to their phone calls.
Thanks

You could try secure messaging Barclays if online allows that, stating your concerns.
Also Google Action Fraud which is a site for reporting things like this.0 -
Sounds a bit dodge. Maybe you could ask in branch? If there are any branches left near you, mine is self service0

Have the bank confirmed that this letter was a scam?
No the lady I spoke to just said if it looks fake then just throw in the bin. She was very curt, barely gave me chance to speak. I am going to call the recoveries department tomorrow who I arranged the F & F settlement with and tell them. Really wanted to pay this using my debit card over the phone but bit nervous now!0 -
In the morning you will be able to ask if they sent the letter. If so then you have nothing to worry about. If not then it is unlikely that someone is listening to your phone calls and the convenience of paying over the phone would (for me) outweigh the small risk of card details being picked up by a baddy.
I would also formally complain about how your security enquiry was handled.
If they confirm that it was a scam letter then report it to Action Fraud.loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0 -
Personally i'd go to town on their attitude to this...i would also be asking how, if the second letter is fake, they got your details.
Would be interesting how this develops. Good luck!Proud to have dealt with our debtsStarting debt 2005 £65.7K.

As this letter has arrived with all the right insider knowledge details just as you are negotiating with the recovery team I would be wary in case it is someone in the recovery team that is trying to steal payments.
Perhaps send a photocopy of the letter to the manager of the team and a formal complaint to the complaints/customer service dept asking them to investigate how someone has been able to get this information?
If someone in the team is trying to steal payments others could fall for it and have their money stolen.0 -
I spoke to Barclays this morning they think the letter genuine (I am still not convinced) but that it was generated in error as somebody cancelled m y full and final agreement and put me back on a repayment plan in error without reading the notes, following a letter from Stepchange. Guy I spoke to didn't know why it was quoting the incorrect reference and has now amended the account back to full and final and will send another letter?0
