While this is a good idea in principle, don't be upset if they say no. There are significant costs to the charity in having you as a volunteer - the charity I run simply wouldn't have the capacity to do this. Someone has to have the spare time to allocate you even simple tasks and manage you, and really the benefit of 'giving them a week' is likely to be 10% to them, 90% to you!
