Calling all parents/parents to be or anyone who will ever have kids

Today I had the fright of my life when my 6 month old Kaitlyn choked on her dinner. I mean literally couldn't breathe and was trying to cry with no sound coming out choking.
THANKFULLY because of being an ex nursery nurse I had done paediatric first aid course so was able to stay calm and give her the proper first aid. Thank god she's ok but god knows what would've happened if I didn't know what to do. It doesn't bare thinking about.

But I felt that I needed to send this to anyone who has children or will have in the future. PLEASE look into doing a paediatric first aid course. You just don't know when you may need it. I'm so glad I did mine....

Sarah x

*Mods I know this is off topic but I really felt the need to post so please don't move it as I think it's something everyone should know about because it could save someone's life.

Very true I recently did a St Johns Ambulance for work and it has been confident building to know I stand a "better" chance of dealing with things.

Of course the DFW way would be to ask to do it through work and get paid a little extra for the responsiblity and get the course free.

Did I bring it on topic for you :)
  • This is weird as just yesterday my hubby and I have booked to go on the St Johns Ambulance course in Child and Infant Emergency Life Support course. Costing us £20 each and is 4 hours out of my life whereas could mean all the difference to my child when its born.

I also think we should all do first aid. I think it should be on the school curriculum.

I feel the same way about keeping up my cardiac resuscitation course I did after my mum's heart attack - as you said, you never know when someone may need the help you can give.

Exactly.. I got my course free through surestart because I was a nursery nurse so it doesn't neccesarily have to cost anything..
But saying that you can't put a price on your children's lives!

Well done for staying calm - it's always worse when it's your own child. I have my First Aid Cert for working with children too and know what you mean it has "kicked in" when I have most needed it

    Take care

My daughter nearly choked at 10 days old, her bottle went down the wrong way I think. She started to turn blue etc.

Her dad panicked like a good un - it was the first time he had fed her on his own, and it ages before he had the nerve to feed her again.

Anyway, I dealt with it best I could, while he phoned the midwife, who was with us within a minute or 2.

She was fine, but I often wondered if what I did was right.

I have since done a paediatric first aid course, and as it happens, what I did was exactly right.

I pray I never have to use what I learned, either on my own children or the children I work with, but I agree all parents should know what to do.

To keep this on topic, many places do free first aid courses, I didnt pay for mine as I did it through work.

Are you OK now Sar? It's scary isnt it hun.
Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches

I'm fine.. and K's quite happily sat watching a baby einstein DVD... gave me a right fright afterwards when I realised how bad it could've been.. I was on autopilot at the time I think!

When we did our course they said that chocking was most popular in a car and on fruit of all things. Certainly made me stop and think.

I underestimated asthma too, until the first aider told me that a child had died on a fair ride from asthma and if you can't get it in control in 5 minutes get them to a hospital.

Our young people are disabled so most of our first aid is the chocking or falls side of things.
