I recently picked one up at www.svp.co.uk They were doing a deal where you could knock £4 off the delivery method of your choice, so they beat the next cheapest (savacentre) by a good couple of quid and could deliver it on a saturday. They deals officially over now, but you might give it a go or try calling them to see if they'd do it anyway?

I was also dead impressed by the fact that they included a couple of free blank discs in with the drive. Small things but I liked the idea that you can use it straight out the box....

As for makes \ models, I found thorough recommendations for the Pioneer 109 series, the NEC 3520 & the LG 4163 . They all come in £30-£40, all cover a range of media and speeds and all have good reviews. I went for the LG on the basis that it got the best scores for quality of writing (over speed and ability to bypass copy protection) as this for me was the key functionality.

I found www.cdrinfo.com is a good site for reviews of writers.

    Hope this helps

Can't disagree there; Pioneer, NEC and LG are very good brands to plump for, not least because of the low prices.

Pioneer are a particularly worthwhile choice, as they are almost guaranteed to work with blank media. These are the drives that the disc manufacturers test their products in! I got a DVR-108BK from OcUK a little while ago. My only gripe with it was that it wasn't a slot-loader, but you cant have everything, can you? ;)
