payment for travel to a course

I'm going on a training course as part of my job which will involve travelling to London. It will take around four hours to travel there and the same to travel back, work are paying for the train fare and hotel but am I entitled to be paid for my travelling time? or get time in lieu? It's a one off course, I don't usually travel as part of my role.
Thanks

I'm not sure what the law says (if anything), but in my experience it varies from company to company.
If you're paid by the hour, I'd expect the company to pay you for travelling time (maybe after subtracting your normal commuting time).
If you're on a salary, the company may expect you to travel in your own time, particularly if the course improves your employability in the general job market.
I think the higher your pay, the more likely it is that the company will expect you to travel in your own time.0 -
The only way to know with certainty is to ask your employer. There is no law to say they have to pay your travel time.
Another element to consider is the hours of the course and the finish time on the final day. If you normally work an 8 hour day but the course is only 6 hours per day would you expect only to be paid for the 6 hours? If the course finishes at lunchtime on the final day, which is pretty common, you may be travelling home partly during your standard working hours.0 -
any hours over your normal working day should get something.. though they could argue you are getting more skills..breathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??0
