Register as Sole Trader

Hey all,

I need some help with registering as a sole trader with HMRC.

I started working as a sole trader in March 2015 this year. The .gov website states "If you start working as a sole trader between April 2014 to March 2015, you should register before 5 October 2015."

I am a bit confused about registering, do I need to register before 5th October because I started working in March 2015 or is it fine to register, after October, like January 2016?

I'm concerned if I don't register before 5th Oct I will be fined/ receive a penalty.

This is all new to me, so any help would be most appreciated.

The .gov website refers to a year, so both months are included in the year.


So you did start self-employment that year (2014-15) and need to register straight away. Get on the phone before 9 am tomorrow.
