wrong national insurance number - am i under paid ?

I started a new job in August 2015 and in the August pay slip i noticed they had put a national insurance number starting with TN which i understand is a temporary one. My employer has done this again with the September pay slip .

I am finding it difficult to understand if this means that they have underpaid or over paid me in August and September .

What is the effect of them using a TN number on me and on them and how vigorously should i pursue this. My correct NI number was given on my job application form and when i went to chat with HR on my start date and i even emailed it to the HR person after i noticed the error in my August payslip

No it won't. However it will matter from a point of view of being credited correctly with NI.

You're on the emergency tax code which means that you're just being taxed on each month separately and not cumulatively as should be happening. You want to get this sorted. Did you hand in your P45?
  • so basically im paying too much tax, who do i approach to get this sorted ?

Not necessarily - you might have paid too little, too much or just the right amount.

However what a non-cumulative tax code will do is look at each month in isolation and not the complete picture over the whole tax year which is what you want to ensure it's correct.

You will need to phone HMRC to get it changed.

You haven't said whether or not you handed in a P45 - this is important and also what tax code was used on the P45.
  • I dont have my P45 to hand in as its not with me. Also i had no days of unemployment between the two jobs and i'm pretty sure i have already used up the tax allowance for this year. I'm thinking that maybe the tax i'm paying is correct, i haven't had the September payslip yet , i am working on what i can see was paid into my bank account
  • will phone hmrc when i get the payslip

Tax doesn't work like that. You don't use up the tax allowance part way through a year and then suddenly start paying tax. Each month you get 1/12th of your allowances.

The problem can arise if you have two payments in the one tax month - ie one from the old job and one from the new job.

It may well be correct for that month but that doesn't mean it's correct overall.

The T suffix means that it's a code that HMRC have to review at the end of the tax year. The letter C probably means cumulative.

It may possibly mean that HMRC has your P45 details and have worked out that you owe a bit of tax. Why do you not have your P45 by the way?

Your P2 Coding Notice should explain this tax code.

I now have the P45 from my previous place and i was on 1060L
I was in the 40% tax bracket but i assumed that my previous employer had paid the correct amount of tax on my behalf. I also haven't had a coding letter yet. I thought one of the previous posts said that i get 1/12th of tax allowance each month. If this is the case then why have i used it up already ?
