This is quite important to me as I grew up in a very cold house, no proper heating, hardly any pictures on the wall, very bare in general. I love hunting for second hand things but I am not confident on where to put them and make them look their best, I suppose I need more practice!
There is no "correct" way to display things; you choose things you like and put them where they give you pleasure! For example a friend of mine had a big win on the nags when he was going through a traumatic divorce. He spent some of the winnings on a picture of the victorious horse and hung it so it was opposite the front door. He said it cheered him up as it was the first thing that greeted him every time he went home.
I think a slight mish-mash of styles helps make homes unique and less like a page from the Next homeware directory, or one of those depressing Sunday lifestyle magazines. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
This is my first thread, it's great to get so many great ideas, hygge what I want to create:0) Apologies for not addressing individually but thank you all so much for your suggestions, I am taking them all in, as per pp I need pics, photos, candles, athmosferic lighting, rugs, cushions, throws, plants and flowers, books, a few well choosen ornaments, I will also look to upcycle some old furniture and I ll look up buttermilk colour as it sounds yummy. I realise having a cozy home is not about the things, its just that I d like to create sthg special for my beautiful little family:)0

Personal things depending on taste/preference - stuff picked up on holiday, pictures, photos, ornaments, table lamps, plants, books, candles...
Non-white walls even if they're cream really warm up a room and definitely not blue ones IMO.4.30: conduct pigeon orchestra...0 -
There's no such thing as scribbled walls, scratched furniture or an untidy house in this 2 up 2 down rented house for a family of 4 and a house rabbit. I keep it nice and my children have been brought up to respect our possessions and our homes (we have had plenty!)
I do think a home is as much about atmosphere reflecting who lives in it. Whatever house we have lived in, whether it be the very big damp 1930's or the tiny new build, we have made it home with very few posessions. We're a canny little family with a good outlook, no matter what is thrown at us.
I will say that our home is different when it's just me and the rabbit during the day but when others come home it becomes a much nicer place to be so I am of the thought that people do make it what it is... and that I'm a grumpy auld soul when I have no one to bounce off :rotfl:
I've brought up 4 and had scribble on a wall once. A home with children doesn't have to have scribbles and damage, you are spot on with respect.Sell £1500
