At this time of the year people with apple trees will often give them away, I have a large bag of cookers to process. They need trimming and cutting down, as can be bruised, but the cooked puree is really useful for lots of things, and can be frozen. I add it to porridge, or use a bit in soups or stews instead of lemon juice. It isn't necessary to cook with sugar, it's more versatile without. You might also find some trees on commons, etc. Blackberries are also worth picking.
