very old debt

Hi
i'm paying off a very old (circ. 1997) loan debt to BLS (was Lloyds Bank). I have never not paid - this was a debt that my ex husband left me with. I was wondering whether it's worth sending a prove it letter? If so, can anyone provide me with the template. It's probably only for about £500 now (was £10k)
Thanks
Anna

It was a loan and I'm pretty sure purely in my ex husband's name as I was 19 and not earning at the time0

Hi Anna
If the debt isn’t in your name you shouldn’t have to pay it.
There’s a sample letter here which you can use as a ‘prove it’ letter.

As James says, you should not be paying a loan that is not in your name, if that's the case, I would immediately cease all payments.
If its not in your name, its not your debt, and definitely not your responsibility.
You don't need to send any letters, they will chase him, not you, how long have you been paying this for ?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I've been paying off for years so yes nearly done, I am going to send the letter James suggested so i can find out what name the loan was in and check they have paperwork in my name - like I said it's so long ago and i was in baby brain mode I can't remember0

Ok so I haven't heard from BLS collections but I have just called them to clarify why I've not heard
The lady on the phone told me that as the debt is over 6 years old they are not able to provide me with the CRA
What do I do now?
Thanks0 -

Assuming you mean no CCA, if that's the case, Stop paying it, and tell them to jog on !!!

You could check your credit reference files to see whether the debt is actually registered in your name on there. In any case, the debt will be unenforceable unless they can supply the credit agreement.

@natdebtline
As it's so old it's not on my credit file, not sure it has ever been.
I did talk to a person on chat from national debtline but they said I should sent another prove it style letter with £1 quoting Consumer Credit Act and giving them 12 days - should I do this James ?0
