Switching electricity supplier in rented house.

I'm in the process of moving into a rented house. The previous tenant was with PowerNI, but apparently Airtricity is cheaper, and I was wondering if I could switch. I've read tenants are allowed to switch as long as they pay the bills, but does this also apply to NI?
What is the process? Do I have to let the landlord know first? Then do I just call Airtricity? Do I have to let PowerNI know, even though I'm not actually with them myself yet (it was previous tenant)?
Should I go with Airtricity (it's pay as you go) or a different one?

^^ I'd also be interested to know why you switched back?
Am I able to use the gas and electric cards that the previous tenant left behind, or do I have to get new ones? Just wondering because according to Budget's website it could take weeks to switch, so I don't know what I'd do in the mean time?
Also, why would a house have 2 electricity keypads? They're definitely for electricity afaik, it says property of NIE on both of them.0 -

I have been with budget for a few years but I did go to airtricity when they where offering £40 free credit .I then waited 21 days and moved back to budget"Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

Ok, thanks guys, I got it all sorted. I had to register with the current providers (Airtricity and PowerNI) first, then I can switch if I want to. I let the landlord know as a courtesy and they were find with me switching.0

With regards to 2 keypads, a house I rented in the past had an awkward to access meter box. The second keypad was fitted above the meter box in a much handier position making it easy to enter the codes compared to trying to enter them on the keypad inside the meter.Norn Iron Club Member No. 252 :beer:0
