NTL old debt

Hoping I can get some help. I applied to change to Virgin for TV and Telephone as I was trying to save money. They told me when they did their credit check that I owed them £20.89 from when I left NTL in 2004. I had always paid bills in full and was astounded when they told me of the debt as this was the first I knew of it. They wont let me change to them until it is paid. I told them that surely it was statute barred after 6 years especially as I have had no contact from anyone asking for money since I left NTL. I also told them of the £125 internet bill which I had disputed as out account was hacked and run up even though it had a premium number block on it. Incidentally I paid up that bill. What can I do ?

It would be statute barred, but in England/Wales/NI that simply means that they cannot or should not be able to take you to court for it.

A company is at liberty to decide not to do business with you on whatever grounds they choose. An old statute barred debt can be one of them.

  • Ask for a breakdown of where it comes from. Is it charges, admin fee, interest?

To be honest there is more than 1 way to skin the cat. Its only £20 and you should say that you want a loyalty credit on your Virgin account for at least that. Anyway, the half price for 9 months deal means you would more than save that amount. But you cant get it unless you are a customer!

It will also clear up any credit file damage thats been done too.

Try talk talk, or sky, all have good offers on at the moment.

The debt may be SB, but that does not stop them wanting to collect on it.
