Cleaning a really dirty wood floor

Thanks PN I will do it in a grid system.
Allybee it isn't the floor like you have. More like little floorboards a couple of feet long by about 2" across.
Good idea about the towel under the knees. I have one of those foam kneeling pad things that I never use in the garden so I will use that maybe. Wish I had thought of it when I was on my knees sanding for hours!!
Aw well, back to painting the ceiling upstairs again while it is still daylight then I can do the floor later.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Vinegar and water is a good way to clean wooden floors.0

I think I will save the vinegar for the windows. Or maybe after I've got the thing really clean. Too tired tonight so will have a go in the morning and let you know how it comes up.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

I took my picture (thanks CC! I usually forget until I have finished then wish I had taken a pic!) and eventually got time today to scrub. The brush I was going to use is much too soft and a wire brush I have would maybe damage the wood I think. As much as I hate to have to, it looks as if I am going to have to buy a brush. What is the best type/size/shape/hardness to buy? I want to get my money's worth. Any recommendations welcome, the cheaper the better!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Done at last! It doesn't look a huge difference probably because I had already cleaned it. I found a great scrubbing brush in Wilko's for 75p and it is exactly what I have needed in my home for years but hadn't ever bought!
I scrubbed the floor so hard and at least I know it is clean now. I think it doesn't look much different as there is a lot of wear and tear and patination I think. It looks as if it was a very light pine colour and it is very dark in areas. But it's clean so I can get on with cleaning all of the other bits.
Is it just me or sometimes when you know that you have to clean every single bit of a house that you feel a bit daunted and don't want to start?Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
