Prengnant & Bedrest advice needed

Hello all,

My wife is almost 6 months pregnant and due to having a colonscopy last year the cervix was potentially at risk.

She has had consultant appointments since 12 weeks and everything with the cervix have been above average and no issues. She then had her final consultation this week and there has been a drop in 1cm thinning of the cervix and has been prescribed a drug to strengthen it and an appointment again next week.

Now, due to timings she cannot have a stitch and the only other possibility is bed rest (some 3 months before the baby is due). The baby is perfectly healthy and the only issue is the cervix caused by the colonscopy before pregnancy.

Now to my query :T
Does bed rest class as sick leave or will she be forced to take early maternity leave?

Thanks, and if you have any questions please ask.

Don

ps sorry if this is posted in wrong area :)

From memory of my last job, whether pregnancy related illness had to be taken as sick leave or early maternity leave depended on how many weeks it was till the due date. Can she check her company's policies?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Have had a quick check and it looks as if she would have to claim smp from 4 weeks before the due date. Before that it looks as if she would be able to claim ssp provided of course she meets the other requirements for both benefits.
  • Thanks for all the replies!

Will have a look though her policy booklet if it can be found!
