Former teachers...what do you do now?

  • Private tutoring (depending on your subject) can be an alternative to classroom teaching but most demand is evenings/weekends - unless you target A level students or homeschoolers. Also, exam marking for a little extra cash - I'm sure you're already aware of this. Of course, these would both depend on your circumstances/childcare arrangements - exam marking is over a short but intensive period!

I left Engineering to be a secondary school science teacher, but after a few years of seeing the mess it is all in and how little control you have over any of it, I returned to Engineering and never looked back.

People think teaching is easy, but let me assure to you that is a misconception!
A smile costs nothing, but gives a lot.
It enriches those who receive it without making poorer those who give it.
A smile takes only a moment, but the memory of it can last forever.

I also left engineering to become a teacher and am now in my 3rd year.

It is less pay and more pressure, BUT I love the teaching and (most) the kids, plus the holidays are superb if you have kids. I work an 80% timetable which makes the job more manageable in terms of work load.

I think it massively depends on the school you work in, as I quite like the school I teach at, other than my boss can be a bit of a Jekyll/Hyde character.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
