P45 showing I earned more money than I have

Hi all, I hope someone can advise as I'm in a bit of a panic!
I've started a new job and handed in my P45. I've earned £4477.26 and paid £11.20 in tax for this tax year, but my P45 states my earnings for the year are £10292.16, and paid £996.60 in tax. I wouldn't even have earned this in the year!
My P45 also states month 6, when the actual month I left was month 5. Hence I've been hammered for tax. I should be paying less than £150 (I think) in the year, and have been taxed £216 for this month alone.
I'm not sure what can be done to fix this.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

do your pay slips match the p45 or your records?Yes Your Dukeiness

No, they don't match at all. My final pay slip shows YTD as £4477.26, which is correct, and my P45 says YTD £10292.16, which I wouldn't have even earned in a year.
My payslips are correct, I have no idea where the figure on the P45 came from, or why it states month 6 rather than month 5. I don't know if that's what's caused the hassle. Either way I have no idea how to resolve this so I'm not paying too much tax, which from looking at HMRC I've paid more than I should pay in a year

You need to contact your Tax Office pronto. Whether it's a genuine mistake by your previous employer or something else, the Tax Office will do calculations based on the P45 numbers.0

I would contact the old employer and tell them that they owe you around £6k being the difference between what they actually paid and what they have declared to HMRC. That should concentrate their minds especially if you happen to mention that you are looking at initiating a small claims action for the outstanding pay. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
