Repay debt without credit file imprint?

Hello
I have been ignoring a utility company for several years without them ever finding out my name to put on the bills or chasing in any concerted way. They are now, very actively. It's around £10k
I can get together the money to pay them.
I want to know if I can repay without my credit file showing any bad history.
I'm trying to apply for a mortgage. My credit score is finally half decent after years of bad bill payment history.
I would like to contact them and deal with it, and can make an immediate payment of several thousand pounds. I'm just so worried as soon as I start to talk to them they will mark something negative on my credit file.
any advice from anyone with experience of negotiating or paying off big debts like this much appreciated.

Err, if they don't know your name, then they can't issue court proceedings, hence you can walk away.
If you contact them, admit the debt, and pay it, it will show defaulted on your credit file for 6 years from date of default.
