If you know the companies phone and ask them
  • i rang the Halifax and they passed me through about 5 departments. the final department said that the archive department doesnt have a phone line and i can only get information by writing a letter with a £10 cheque
    Does this sound right?

A subject access request costs £10 which should get you the information you need. Google for a SAR letter.
