Paying £1 to my creditors- advice from StepChange

I have been advised by StepChange to cancel all my credit card direct debits, and then write to them telling them i'm going to be paying them £1 per month.
Do the credit card companies freeze the interest in this case then? If they didnt freeze the interest then i would be just getting more and more into debt.
Has anyone done this sort of thing?

You have to ask them to freeze interest and charges, they are not oblighed to, but most will, when asked.
