    From what you have said though it could well be that what they're saying is correct. Paying £85 a month wouldn't have even covered the interest accumulating so the balance would have been going up and up and up, even more so when your payments dropped to a few pounds.

    BUT you haven't paid the loan off have you? Just because your repayments add up to the initial amount borrowed does not mean you have fulfilled your side of the bargain.

    You were paying reduced payments and in the early months of the loan the interest would have been accruing.

    Verbal agreement isn't worth the paper its written on
