Taking a Mortgage as an older couple

We are in the process of buying a new build that will be built next June. Problem is very are very wary of taking a mortgage on as my partner is 63 next birthday and I will be 51. We currently have no mortgage and hope to sell our property for £150,000, the new house being £269,950 minus a 5% deposit and wanting approx £34k for additional extras. My partner is the higher wage earner and hopes to work on till 70 but not guaranteed. We have approx £50k in savings and lump sum. We have till Thursday to decide to go ahead but can't get sufficient advice as the requirement is not till next June.
Any advice on best mortgage etc. gratefully received.

There are mortgages up to age 70 -75, but have you worked out the monthly costs you would have to pay? And are you sure both of you want to work until that age? You are mortgage free and want to take on a big debt.

    How much are your earnings?

You can get mortgages to any age with one or two mainstream lenders but you have to be able to afford it

Thanks for that. We know its a big step especially being free of all debt. Our total income is around 40+k. The other half will be on approx £1500 per month once he retires and I will be bring in around £600. I reckon the mortgage will be around £800-£900 a month with insurance on top and would like to think that will will manage it okay. I guess in this day and age the old pay off the mortgage before retirement is out the window. We have to move for one reason or another and I would anticipate that moving from a property on a council scheme to one in a private sector will cost as as much as this one so we might as well bite the bullet now rather than later:eek:
