It doesn't matter if you have an aerial or not, it is if your TV is receiving TV as it is broadcast that matters.
You need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record programmes as they're being shown on TV or live on an online TV service. This is the case whether you use a TV, computer, tablet, mobile phone, games console, digital box, DVD/VHS recorder or any other device.

You can watch Catch Up TV, DVDs,play your Playstation - anything you wish - except for receive TV programs as they are broadcast.

There is a long thread about the TV license on these forums (sorry, can't find it at the moment) where there is lots of helpful info.

  • I have been on to hubby about stopping the TV license, and watching catch up etc, as its £12 odd a month, it doesn't seem alot, but it is when you got to watch every penny.

I have said it will be like watching TV a day or two later, so not really miss g out on anything,

So we are setting the Boys Wii up to the main TV, and watching catch up TV on that..we are trailing it first to get into the habit and then cancelling the TV license.

I have grown up children, but I sooo feel for you..

oh thanks ill have a look at that thread tonight. i have two children in childcare and as childcare has gone down as both are now in school i need my new calculation so I can attempt to figure out what i will loose.

Im so confused , I need to act now , we are currently working on a 150 per month food budget , Im gonna have to seriously look at this. Sky will have to go I have already told the children ill look at the package and try and keep thier channels . I need the extra money as my daughter starts rainbows soon. Okay im going to eat dust for a few years then .

I can't understand why anyone who needs tax credits would contemplate having Sky. Surely having a few quid in savings would be better. We've never been able to afford I fancy TV .

Btw no such help as TC when I was juggling the pennies as a SAHM with two little ones. But I'm a baby boomer who had it easy and has it all.

Ah, my mother says things like this. No such thing as tax credits when I had you. Blah. Blah.
Doesn't make it any easier for us though.... She still managed to own her own house. We never will!

I am in the same boat as you dizzy. Single parent with 2 kids, so sole earner.
By the looks of it I'll lose about £30 a week :( I have no idea where else i can cut down expenses.
  • I feel for you all. We have just had our tax credits cut from £650 a month to £20 a month because DS (aged 16) is no longer in full time education due to his poor health.

We knew it was coming and were able to plan for it but its still tough. The Debt Free Wanabee board is great for people on a very tight budget even if you dont have debts.

I agree but would have been jumped on if I'd said that. As a person that pays a very substantial amount of personal Tax I don't feel that it's fair that I'm enabling companies to pay such poor wages that Tax payers are forced to subsidise these wages through the Tax Credit system. To then find out that people think that Sky is something they need to spend this benefit on.... well!

I am on tax credits and I have sky ; just the kids part. Quite hurt about people's remarks about it. I have made a lot of sacrifices so that my children are brought up to be well adjusted, respectful people. They have to do without things, never grumble and in my mind the child tax credits part should be spent on their up keep. I am savvy with our food bill so that I can treat them in other ways. I work and pay taxes too but can't command a high enough wage to go above the allowances. When the last lot of cuts affected us I had to sit down and check the budget and they had to make choices of things we had to give up.
