Mobile contracts after discharge

Does anyone have any experience with changing contracts soon after discharge? I was discharged from bankruptcy back in February and I'm now looking to upgrade my mobile contract but the one I have my eye on is with EE, through a different website. I'm currently with three. So do I risk a credit check with EE or stay with three...

  • Upgrades with current provider wont be credit checked.....you'll probably fail trying to take on a new contract elsewhere (I did)
Not quite a newbie as you think ;);) (the member formally known as philnicandamy!)

FINALLY a qualified CAB debt caseworker 2015..:p

  • Or just threaten to leave three, and get them to match the EE deal.

Aren't people who have just been through bankrupcy supposed to have learned how to manage money?

So going for an "upgrade" is not eactly MSE unless it's cheaper?
  • It's a bit ignorant to assume that someone can't work out if a new mobile contract is more beneficial for them, but quite in keeping with many of your recent posts on this forum. You are also making assumptions on the reason for the OP's bankruptcy. There are many causes and quite a few of them are the result of unfortunate circumstances which could not have been avoided, and not always down to poor handling of money.

As a general rule of thumb (there are exceptions to every rule) people need a good credit history to be able to get further credit - which means many BR's actually didn't become BR because they couldn't manage their own money(or they couldn't have got into debt in the first place) but because of an event beyond their control (such as the BR of someone else who owes the BR money, an accident that prevents them working etc)

Can I suggest you keep your advice and comments on this particular board to something that you can demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of. :)

P.s there is a difference between 'cheaper' and 'best value'
  • Remember an upgrade doesn't always mean you pay more, indeed you may even get a better deal with a new phone and it may in fact be cheaper.

The only experience I have is getting a new contract after bankruptcy, but I didn't get a new phone with it.

I saved up and bought the phone outright. I was with Orange and moved over to BT. My wife did the same last week and we have had zero problems.

We were discharged just over a year ago.

Unlikely you will get a contract with phone if you change providers.

My suggestion would be to save up for the phone you want and get a 12 month contract without phone or a pay as you go.
