I have been to College and University, graduated in 2007 full of hope and optimism.

I left University having completed a (sports coaching) course which at the time took me away from a town and job I had become stuck in a rut at - but I applied without real thought for the future.

8 years on, I feel like life is passing me by, my career options feel extremely limited.

I left University and wanted to explore becoming a teacher, found a school support role and started to build up my experience. I have since found myself having worked in 4 schools, various school support roles, with no real ambition to now become a teacher. (I would be limited to an extremely over subscribed course and jobs prospects limited. I also have 3 young children)

I now sit at work, extremely unmotivated and cant see a way out, cant see any options having only had a background in retail & school support. Having 3 young children brings its own challenges and I am now feeling my work impacting on my home life, which obviously I don't want.

Just wondered if anyone had been a similar situation, desperate in there current role, feeling like there is no way out?

(I moved back to the town with my long term partner and 3 kids to get family support, again full of hope and expectations but again I feel isolated due to the lack of job satisfaction!)

Hope this makes sense and people can relate and advise....Should mention I am in the 30-35 age category)

Thanks for reading....

Given that you have three young children, would retraining be an available avenue? Have you actually gotten any guidance so far? National careers might be a starting point, but due to having a degree you will be very unlikely to receive funding/loans, so you would need to self fund.

Given your degree, have you thought of exploring sports further? You seem to have completely changed course twice in a relatively short space of time. You need to think long and hard, perhaps the exxact role you are doing now is unchallenging, perhaps just look for a new job rather than yet another massive upheaval.
  • Thanks for your reply.

That's exactly it, I feel de-motivated by current role, which having been doing (similar) I haven't seen any progress, which I now realise is not possible for school support roles.

I am looking for a job change but totally unsure in what direction to go?

In a way having the degree adds pressure as I could explore retail again but feel that would have been a waste of 8 years and a degree course - that is what I am struggling with.

As anyone will know school support is not great money (pro-rated to take out the school holidays...) but confused and unsure of my next move, which is getting me down.
  • Hi,

Sorry to hear you feel stuck, I have been in the same situation. I am currently taking a life coaching course and I am looking for 10 participants for free coaching. If you are interested please email me at joanneforry@gmail.com and I will send you the details.
    Best wishes
    Joanne.

If you do decide to go down the pgce route there's other ways including scitt and other courses that are training in school most of the time as well as in the uni.

The other thing is possibly doing something in sports like being a personal trainer and the like, but it's sorting all that out and building a client base etc. just depends really.

Tbh though I think a lot of us are stuck in a rut in our jobs not knowing what to do next. I googled how to change career the other day, answered some random questions on a guardian website and it gave some ideas, might be worth a try
